History of The Nishikawa School of Nihon Buyo - Japanese Classical Dance

The Nishikawa School is based in Tokyo, Japan. The Nishikawa School began in the sixteenth century and is the oldest traditional dance school in Japan, specializing in Nihon Buyo (Japanese classical dance), a dance closely connected with Kabuki.

Senzo Nishikawa X, current headmaster, was awarded the prestigious honor of National Living Treasure of Japan. This award is presented to men and women in the fields that preserve traditional Japanese crafts and performing arts. The headmaster was recognized for teaching, performing, and promoting Nihon Buyo for over 60 years.

The Nishikawa School holds a long and extraordinary history with former headmasters Senzo Nishikawa II and IV considered to be the most outstanding choreographers in the history of Japanese Classical Dance. Many dances choreographed by former headmasters are still performed today.
